Capillary rise in the cap - Revegetation trials at Nabalco’s alumina refinery at Gove

The long-term sustainability of reconstructed capping systems at Nabalco’s residue disposal area is dependent on the establishment of an effective capillary barrier.

A capillary barrier contributes to successful revegetation by impeding the movement of potentially toxic solutes into the plant root zone.

Research at Gove is focussing on the use of coarse residue sand as a capillary barrier and aims to elucidate solute and water movement within various capping options being evaluated at the site.
