From coal mine to forest - Sustainability and success of rehabilitation at Tarong coal mine

The aim of rehabilitation at Tarong open cut coal mine is to establish a stable, sustainable flora and fauna habitat. Six years of research have resulted in the development of success criteria that focus on ecological functional success. Many aspects of ecosystem establishment have been examined including:
  • Patterns of vegetation development
  • Recovery after fire
  • Development of soil microbial activity
  • Comparison of Landscape Functional Analysis (LFA) and conventional monitoring techniques
