How to assess ecological functioning

Compositional and functional assessment of rehabilitation of Astrebla grassland at Cannington mine.

BHP Cannington mine is re-establishing the local Astrebla grassland on disturbed land. Rehabilitation success was examined by assessing species composition, structural development of the community and attributes of ecological functioning, including:
  • Species density, composition, cover and biomass
  • Soil nutrient status, soil organic matter, soil microbial biomass
  • Soil surface condition
  • Landscape functional analysis of stability, infiltration and nutrient cycling
