Technologies for erosion prediction - Pre- and post- mining erosion: Solutions through laboratory, field and modelling programs

Erosion of soil and mine wastes due to high intensity rainfall events can cause serious problems to the stability of post-mining landforms and result in possible contamination of the environment.

Prediction of such erosion requires a knowledge of soil properties that cause the detachment of soil particles and also the energy inputs from rain events.

Data from instrumented field plots under both natural and simulated rainfall have been analysed by CMLR to provide predictions of erosion rates.

Models have also been developed to predict field soil erosion rates using laboratory scale rainfall simulation. Such predictions have been tested against soil losses measured in the field.
