Kangaroo grass: Does provenance matter?
Native grass species and provenances most suitable
for road verge planting
The scope for using native grasses on road verges is receiving attention as a visually attractive option requiring less
maintenance than exotic grasses. However, the successful establishment of native grasses does not just rely on the selection
of appropriate species. Kangaroo grass, for example, varies considerably in stature across it’s range and so it is important
to select the most appropriate provenance or variant as well. This project with Queensland Main Roads, Greening Australia
and QDPI had the objectives of determining:
- The suitability of different grass species and provenances for planting on road verges
- How successfully native grasses can resist weed invasion.
