Matthew McGann

  Environment Department Minera Yanacocha Peru
After a number of years working as a consultant Hydrogeologist, I took up a position in the Mine Engineering Department at Minera Yanacocha. The position required that I plan and implement dewatering systems for a number of open pit mine at the Yanacocha site. In an effort to expand my experience base I started the MSc Mineral Resources (Environment) program in 2002. Shortly after starting the MSc program I transferred to the Environment Department at Minera Yanacocha working on EIS baseline work primarily in the area of region water resources assessment and impact analysis. Through time my role and responsibilities have evolved and I am now responsible for site closure planning.

The courses offered through the CMLR have allowed me to quickly gain a greater understanding of specific issues regarding mine site closure practices but also the more general concepts of environmental management required at mine a site. The external learning format has allowed me to continue my education while maintaining full-time employment.
