Nick Wandke (YOB
1986)
completed undergraduate studies at Deakin University in Melbourne in
Environmental Management. After extensive exposure to a variety of
working projects during undergraduate study including wildlife
management, habitat rehabilitation, weed and pest control, and
project management, Nick decided to focus on specialisation in
environmental management for the mining industry.
In 2007 after graduating in Melbourne, Nick enrolled externally at
UQ in the Graduate Diploma in Mineral Resources (Environment).
Through CMLR Nick has pursued units including Soil & Growth Media
Management (LAND7009), Vegetation & Habitat Rehabilitation
(ENVM7301), Water Management in the Minerals Industry (MINE7050),
Mining Environmental Management Processes (MINE7051), Mine Waste
Management & Landform Design (MINE7000), and Mining Environmental
Planning (PLAN7142).
In 2008, Nick is
developing a Waste Management project thesis (MINE7008) with Xstrata
Coal Queensland at Rolleston Coal Pty Ltd. Rolleston Coal Pty Ltd is
a joint venture owned by Xstrata Coal, Sumitomo and Itochu, with
Xstrata Coal Queensland managing the operation. Currently in its
third year of operation, the mine produces a low-ash thermal coal
suitable for export and domestic markets. It is envisaged that the
mine will produce up to six million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) by the
end of third year production. The mine is located 16 kilometres west
of the township of Rolleston in Central Queensland, approximately
270 km west of Gladstone.
The project
will identify and detail waste management procedures for all waste
streams at the Rolleston Coal Mine. The project will make an
assessment of current practices to identify constraints to optimum
performance in waste management. Dimensions considered will include
education of staff, management of contractors, reporting and
performance auditing processes. The project will become a living
document at Rolleston Coal, with periodic review to be determined
later in the project’s development.
Nick has recently accepted an offer of
graduate employment with Xstrata Coal Queensland. After completing
his final semester in June 2008, Nick will relocate to Oaky Creek
Coal in Central Queensland in the role of Environment & Community
Graduate at the mine. His studies with CMLR combined with UQ's
career support and his vacation work experience, have proved highly
valuable in attaining graduate employment after study.
