Determining rehabilitation success - Monitoring and determining end-point criteria for rehabilitated land following bauxite mining at Weipa, North Queensland.

In conjunction with Comalco Aluminium Ltd, the CMLR has developed a set of parameters against which the majority of rehabilitation at Weipa can be assessed for stability and future management requirements. The monitoring of sites established over a 10 year period of collaborative research has provided valuable information on a series of criteria including:
  • species composition, community structure and vegetation health;
  • resilience of the rehabilitated communities to fire;
  • reproductive capacity of the rehabilitation; and
  • soil physical, chemical and microbial activity.
