Trees and toxicity - Responses of Australian native trees to metal toxicity

Metal mining regularly results in tailings and waste dumps with high metal levels. If the resulting substrates are acidic, this can result in high metal availability to plants and the potential for toxicity. Very little is known about the tolerances of Australian native trees to high concentrations of metals.

This project is quantifying relationships between plant growth, metal in the plant, toxicity symptoms and bioavailable concentrations of metals in the growth substrate.
